Mechanical resistance test

To measure the coefficient of friction (for computer simulation),we let down the vehicle on an inclined plane at low speed. We measure the distance traveled by vehicle to its final stop. This gives an estimate of a coefficient of dynamic movement by the following formula:

h :        height of the center of mass of the vehicle on the incline plane. (m)

L :        length of the base of the inclined plane. (m)
D :       distance between the base of the inclined plane and the position of the center of mass of

             vehicle when the vehicle stops. (m)

µ :        mechanical friction coefficient

Calculation

In this arrangement, one can find the mechanical friction coefficient with the following formula, provided that the speeds are low. It is therefore necessary that the height h is small.

                                   μ =  h  /(L+D)

Students 3 tests and average the results.
